E-cigarettes and vaping have been in the news nonstop as of late. While the practices of smoking from these devices aren’t new, the controversies surrounding them are continuing to gain momentum.
Is vaping bad for you? Are e- cigarettes better for you than traditional tobacco products? Can vaping kill? These are all questions surrounding those who have chosen these alternative methods of getting a nicotine fix. Should people rush to conclusions? No, however, there is research out there that suggests that e-cigarettes and vaping are bad for you.
Is Vaping Bad for You?
The question of whether vaping is bad for you is a hot topic because many believed that vaping was a much safer alternative to smoking traditional tobacco products. Instead of inhaling all the dangerous chemicals known to be associated with tobacco products, vaping and e-cigarettes were thought to have cut illness risks since they didn’t contain all the same chemicals.
The CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have partnered up with not only state and local health departments but other clinical and public health partners. Their goal is to investigate an outbreak of lung injury that may be associated with the use of e-cigarettes and vaping products.
As of October 8, 2019, there have been approximately 1,299 lung injury cases associated with the use of e-cigarette and vaping products across 49 states, 1 U.S. territory, and the district of Columbia. Sadly, of those illnesses, 26 deaths have been confirmed.
While the current research is headed towards the adverse effect on the lungs, previous research has shown a connection between vaping and damaged gum tissue. In a first of its kind study at the University of Rochester Medical Center, researchers suggested that e-cigarettes are “equally damaging to the gums and teeth as conventional cigarettes.”
According to Irfan Rahman, Ph.D. professor of Environmental Medicine at the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry, and leader of the study, during their research they saw that when the vapors from the e-cigarette were burned, it actually caused tissue cells to release “inflammatory proteins” that stressed the cells, resulting in damages that could lead to several oral diseases.
Not Ready to Quit? Then Try This
While more research still needs to be done into the “is vaping bad for you” debate, dentists urge their patients to quit before any significant damage can be done. However, they do understand that quitting isn’t always as easy as going cold turkey. That said, there are several different things you can do to at least minimize your current use of vaping tools and e-cigarettes, including:
- Monitoring your oral health carefully: This requires you to watch for any signs of irritation or damage to your gums, teeth, and surrounding tissues. Some of these signs can include receding gumlines or gums that bleed. Other signs can include bad breath and loose teeth.
- Slowly taper your use: If going cold turkey isn’t an option for you at this point, consider slowly decreasing your use in steps. If you use your vape multiple times a day, start cutting back to 2 or 3. Once you’ve accomplished that, cut it again until you can finally put the vape away for good.
- Seek regular dental care: This is vital so that your dentist can help you monitor your oral health. There is only so much you can do at home. So, stay open and honest with your dentist so they can help you get ahead of any potential issues.
